Overview:
I am studying how the development different interpretations of pitch both limited and expanded the possibilities of composers and players. On many modern instruments, pure intonation is no longer possible or as easy to achieve, some examples are the piano and guitar. This makes many of the modern works require instruments to use equal temperament, and composers to write music assuming equal temperament. I play instruments of both equal temperament, and of pure intonation, so I have some experience in this field of study. Another reason this topic fascinates me is because it would be interesting to further explore both the limitations/benefits of equal temperament, past my own experiences with it. I believe in studying this topic I will be able to better understand pitch/equal temperament, and how to better apply both in my studies. Also, it will help me better understand the limitations and benefits on the composers, allowing me to better interpret the music in the modern setting it is played in.
